as of now my rear end is darkened but it is only because i didn't clean the outside of the housing from the oil that dripped from draining it, just wiped it off.
seal it anyway you please that keeps it from leaking, the cheapest way is rtv and that's the way it is done from the factory.
I wouldn't have put a gasket there if one wasn't already there - I think mine had a gasket when I took it apart... that, or the RTV Ford used sealed hard and even, and came off (in parts) like a gasket.
mine didn't have a gasket and i live close enough to the axle plant here in michigan and my mother works there so it got taken in when the truck was first purchased due to a whining humming sound coming from the rear axle. a few rear end swaps and they got it fixed and i pulled the cover off and it's rtv.
some of it was stuck to the diff cover where some of it was stuck to the rearend but it was definitely rtv. i could see where it would come off and look like a gasket, hell it might even be a gasket that looks like rtv sealant.
I'm doing mine again today....leak's been getting worse. instead of Amsoil, going with RP since it's so much easier to get. that and black Permatex on both parts before torqueing down. even though RP says it doesn't need friction modifier, i have a box (11 left) of the amsoil FM, so i might as well toss that in there.
well doesn't this just suck! looks like i have "leak through" of my diff cover. i meticulously changed the fluid, permatex on both sides, looked great...but she's leaking through the cover..."seeping"
on the inside, there was a very small rust spot, very small...must be where she's leaking through. guess i'll go cheap and get an OEM from a sponsor.
of course, that has to happen when i have my civic apart...went to do the brake job, caliper boot is shot and caliper is rusted to heck.
