When I bought my truck new in Oct 2000- 99 xlt 5.4 4x4, i made the assumption that it had limited slip. I mean, come on, who sells a truck in Minnesota without it. Obviously, I was wrong. (who buys one? me-ignorant). Anyway, come winter I mize will park this thing. It is so bad and dangerous, even with 600lbs on the wheel wells and my tools. As you know, when i get stuck(which i do all the time) only Two wheels spin. I does not work to put my foot on the brake and try to catch the other one. I was contemplating adding a lim slip but was thinking, why do this? why not just put a locker on instead. dont u think if one was to install something a locker would be better? And if so, would not a locker in the front be where to put it?
I lived in Minnesota from 92 till Feb 2009. I bought my 97 F150 5.4 4X4 in Feb. 2004 it did not have limited slip, not once did I get stuck. Are you doing off road in winter?
just driving thru unplowed roads, stop and go stuff, little hills, part of it , i think has to do with the 265 size tires. truck should be able to hanlde snow.
They make a posi unit called 'locks right' you can get one from summit racing or Jegs. This fits inside your carrier and bingo! you have posi without the axle snapping spool or welded unit. BE WARNED, this is a cool item, but, not all that sturdy. I broke mine under extreme pressure.

a detroit locker or tru-trac would be the way to go in the front and rear but it will cause your truck to wander straight line and chirp around corners.
You're tires are the problem. I've had 5 previous one wheel wonders and never had any problem driving in the snow in 4x4. I live right on Lake Superior, where most of the snow falls.
so fireball 440,, what size would you go with? id have to wait for these tires only have 10k on them. i realized narrower tires work better in the snow but thought the orig size was the way to go.
I agree with Fireball 440, The tires most likely the prob, The wider tires are prob filling the tread with snow then acting like slicks and not providing the bite you need, You could get a spare set of rims and put some snows or more agressive tread tires on for the winter months and keep your 265's for the summer, Both sets will last longer that way
Now to throw some gas on the fire.... on my '01 Suprecab 4x4, I am running LT265/75/R16 on it and have no issues here in NY State and I get lake effect off from both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Now I do have a limited slip, but most of the time I run around in 2 wheel with no issues.

It's not so much the size 265 or 285, but rather the tread pattern. On my 97 I ran BFG A/T KO's and had no problems. On my 03 I'm running Mastercraft Courser2 A/Ts and am happy with them as well. If you're running the street tread that comes from the factory, it's no wonder your not getting anywhere.
fireball is right on the money with what he said. must know because that superior is a p.i.t.a. come winter time no wonder there are mail boxes 10 feet in the air.
