auto to 4spd??

i have a 79 4x4 with a 302, auto tranny and i belive a np 205 transfer case. my problem is that the auto tranny works great in reverse but in the forward gears it acts like it"s starting off in high gear( goes to about 3000 rpm before it starts to move), theres also a noise that sounds like a really bad lifter coming from around the bell housing that seems to go away when it"s in reverse???.any ideas?. is this tranny shot?....also how hard would it be to bolt in a 4spd from a 79 1 ton? will it bolt up to my transfer case? and what mods will have to be done other than the obvious (pedal assy, clutch and flywheel..etc..)...any help would be great.. thanks.. paul..

This sounds like the forward clutch pack is worn

I am guessing that you have a C6 in your truck.
As long as you get a 4 speed transmission that is for
a 4x4, it will bolt up to your transfer case. You
might want to check the diameter and spline count
of the output shaft though. I know that the C4,
FMX, and C6 are all different from one another ...
I do not know whether the NP435 or T-18 is the same
as the C6 or not.

The 302/351W flywheel part number that you need
is E8TR-6375-BA. You will also need a complete clutch set;
I recommend the 11" rather than the 10" - though they both
will bolt to that flywheel and work.
The "Power Torque" brand part # MU49-1 purchased from
Advance Auto Parts is the one I have on all my trucks,
and it has worked excellent. The set comes with the
clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing, pilot
bearing, and alignment tool.
In addition to the pedal assembly, you will also need
the manual linkage to actuate the clutch, and will also
need the floor pan over the transmission that allows
for a shift lever.
