I own a 73 Ford F250 Highboy with a 4spd tranny and 4WD, its great in the mud and dirt but even with oversized tires I have the 360 under the hood running at 3,000 on the highway. This truck has a divorced transfer case, so I was thinking of putting a gear splitter after the tranny, before the transfer case so I could cruse the highway a little more efficiently. Not to mention the fact 1st is useless on the streets with the current gearing. I also had the idea of putting a two speed rear axel in the back for street use. Any thought or ideas would be much appreciated.
Advance Adaptors makes a Ranger gear splitter which mounts between the transmission and bell housing. It is rated for about 420 FT.LBS. of torque and has an overdrive reduction of about 27%. You could put in a ZF 5 speed or a NV4500 5 speed but they cost quite a bit. I have not seen any two speed rear ends that would be practical or cost effective for these trucks. Good luck!
Nic, have you considered the GearVendors unit ? The GV has a torque capacity of 4500 lbs-ft. Yes, you read that correctly, 4500. The AA Ranger, at 420 lbs-ft, will not last long behind your 360, they just aren't strong enough for V8 power. The GV unit is intended to bolt onto the back of your tranny....in your case, the short driveshaft between the trans and T-case would get even shorter. Some guys hang the GV off from the back of the T-case, but then you can only split gears and run overdrive in 2wd. Where I live ( Michigan ) I would need it to work in 4wd as well. You might also consider the Clark 280 series transmission. They have a nice ratio spread and are available used for a bunch less $$ than the NV4500. Interested ? DF
