Well this might be a moot point since the dealer said its really questionable if my 09 will even be built... but just today put in my order. I never thought I'd buy new but didnt want to miss out on my last chance to get a stick shift while they still make em. I could go used, but sticks are very rare in the 08's and up and I really want to stick to that since I like the interior so much better and I want this to be my truck thats going to last till it falls apart (so I really want to break it in right myself).
I got everything I wanted that I could afford at least, but now I am really regretting that I ordered a V8. I hear so much great things about the 10, and it is a heavy truck... F350 CC 4x4 8'. The truck will rarely work though, only the couple times a month it gets loaded up, or if I get the camper I want (again only couple times a month). And my main concern is fuel mileage using it to drive to work (80 mi rnd trip). I know some folks here I talk to with nearly identical trucks (CC 4x4 F250s usually) often claim 15-17mpg highway unloaded takin it easy. I can live with that. But the V10 only being a $300 option (cause I opted for the 4.10LS on the V8, else the V10 would be a 600 opt) really makes me wonder if I should get that. But from what I hear the V10 cant even get 15mpg highway unloaded... is that the general consensus? IDK. Probably too late since I already put the order in to change it now. Man I wish they would have put the variable cam timing in the V10 I wonder if thats the biggest difference between the 8 and 10 other than the extra 2 cylinders of course. Maybe it would have given it that extra mpg or so. I am not the show off type and I am used to underpowered (I drive a 6 cylinder 4x4 f150 with 33's and 3.55). So I hope the 5.4 will suffice... the CC 8' is really making me wonder though... I guess thats a disadvantage of ordering - cant test drive it first.
thats allot of truck for a V8 even the new three valve ones. my 04 gets around 12mpg around town with 4.30 gears and 285-75r16 tires, and im somewhat heavy footed. power wise i would get the v10 with your truck if it were a short bed extended cab like mine i would so get the v8 with 4.10 rears. i hated my truck with the stock 3.73 and now with the 4.30 its what it should have been from the factory but its still allot of truck for that v8. if i had the money and didnt have so much money in my baby i would trade her in for a 09 F-350 with the v10 and 4.30 rears. just my two cents
and by the way i ordered a new E-350 work van three and a half months ago, nothing special just a one ton red van with red paint and chrome package and its still not here yet they said hopefully sometime this week that its in shipment. so if you just ordered your truck i dont see it being a problem changing it. besides your the one paying for it anyway!
I have a 2005 F350 with the 5.4L 3V engine. I don't haul or two much so it's fine for my needs. However, if I were ordering a new Super Duty, I would definitely get the V10 3V engine.
Call up the dealership tomorrow and change the order... it's not too late. It's more than worth the $600.00 for the V10 3V engine.
Tristan,
I hope you can at least get the vehicle built. I think the 5.4 will be adequate and your 4.10 will offset the extra weight of the longer vehicle. It seems to be a real toss up when you compare the 5.4 and 6.8. I'd like the extra power of the 6.8, but I don't really need it. The 6.8 is a bargain as far as option costs go.
I think the vast majority of gassers are company vehicles with the 5.4 engine. All plodding along, working every day. As long as you are OK with meager acceleration, the 5.4 will work. For the number of times you need to move quicker, you'll have to rev it more. I find I can do all my driving by rarely exceeding 3000 RPM. I don't bother trying to keep up with traffic when leaving lights or stop signs.
I think you would find the V10 more enjoyable with not too high a fuel penalty. Might have been worth ordering for the unique combo of V10 and stick.
I didn't have very high expectations when I ordered mine and I can say the vehicle meet those expectations. The multitude of design flaws that exist in these (and other) modern vehicles make me glad I spent only what was needed and didn't pay for a bunch of frivolous options.
The major flaws are: set-back engine that results in a very cramped pedal placement, terrible FI programming that provides NO engine braking, and the clumsy shift pattern.
Ford really messed up with the 08 redesign. I haven't seen anything to make me think these pickups are as good as those from the 07 model year.

Get the V10. Call your dealer tomorrow and tell him that you need to change your order. They don't have to like it--you're paying for it.
The V10 will give you the option of towing more, and more comfortably, if you have to. Especially if you get the camper that you mention. Those things add tremendous weight to the truck. Even a travel trailer will tax the heck out of a 5.4. I'd say get the V10 and have the power available if you need it...
I think you'll always second guess your decision if you get the 5.4L; however, you will not get better than 15mpg with the V10 unless it's a plain-jane 2WD regular cab or something like that. Consistently, on the freeway, you'll get closer to 12mpg with the configuration you ordered if it had the V10. If you load it up though, the V10 will kick *** and haul anything you can throw at it. Loaded it may get better mileage than the 5.4L. If I weren't married, and could afford a new truck, it'd have a V10 and a truck bed camper loaded in the bed at all times.
old man said (its better to have and not need it then to need and not have it ) call and change your order
I think that's how I ended up with a diesel. I DON'T WANT TO START THAT DEBATE!!! Just agreeing with the comment.
The 5.4 is a great motor, but get what you want, it sounds like you don't really WANT a 5.4, and if you want this truck forever, the 5.4 will do it but don't regret not having the v-10 later.
