The window must be up (or out if gate is down) Open the access panel. Its been awhile, so I dont remembe if you must remove the window and track. But I dont think so. In any case, the aluminum thing makes no differnce.
Yeah, I have the tailgate OPEN, the window is UP/OUT most of the way (extended -- disabled the safety switch years ago), and the access panel is OUT.
I have full access to the thingy, but just can't figure out how in the world to get the switch out of the hole! Arrrgh. I take the wedge dohookie thing out and it loosens a bit. Is there a "turn 90 degreess and pull" trick? Am worried I might break something if I force it, so am looking for experience -- it has to be easy. Grrr.
I would think the switch would go out the outside like a door lock cylinder after you pull out the retainer. If so that means you gotta take the alumninum panel off to get it out.
Don't know if you solved this already but here goes anyway...
There is a wire "C-clip" that is actually shaped like a pointed C that holds the switch on to the lock tumbler. Get the gate down and the window up/out, put the key in the tailgate and then turn it al the way to one side or the other, just short of activating the up or down switch. This will allow you to pull the clip out (towards the center of the truck). once you do that the switch lifts right off the tumbler without having to remove the trim panel or the lock. The "wedge" can stay in place too.
