I usually only lurk over here but a customer of mine is finally comming in for his water pump replacement and a bunch of other stuff. I have a few questions about the water pump, I thought I read somewhere in this forum about needing a 36mm and 54mm open end wrenches to remove the fan. Is there a detailed set of instructions with confirmation of those wrench sizes around. I tried searching, could find what I was looking for, and I didnt see a tech folder.
Thanks in advce for the help its greatly appriciated.
I actually found the tools at NAPA. Both the fan clutch wrench and the pulley holding tool. You think I could find a 1 7/8" wrench anywhere...not. So I bit the bullet and bought the tool. Anyway I will use it cause the ambulances I work on all have 7.3's
Your welcome. It is a pretty easy job to do. Just follow the instruction to the T and you'll be all set.
I've posted this before, but please DON'T follow the instructions to a T. The following statement "Tighten the water pump bolts to35-46 Lb*Ft." is absolutely WRONG. This is double the correct torque and can easily strip the threaded holes in your engine block.
I've asked the owner of the web site TWICE to correct this otherwise excellent article, but they haven't done it (in a year). I guess they don't care or they would fix it or take it down.
Good luck with your pump replacement, it's not a bad job at all.
That's true John I spaced out that part. I was mainly refering to the removal of the fan and shroud. Thanks for bringing that up again. Reps to you
Edit: I was just in CT this weekend helping Pete (7.3 Rocket) with his truck.
No problem Jim, I just wanted to make sure no one screws up their block.. Every time I see a water pump thread I subscribe, just to make sure. Let me know the next time you're down this way, I'm near the shoreline in North Branford.
Well I got it done and it wasnt bad at all. It went well...all except for the fact that it was 100* yesterday. But I did look up the right specs and even converted to inch pounds so all was well and the customer is happy. Thanks for all the help.
