I finally got the cooling fan and clutch off. They are torqued on to about 100 lb-ft, and then time and corrosion adds to that!
First and most important: The threads on both the '99 2V and '06 3V I checked are STANDARD thread, not reversed. Some info I found on the 'net is cryptic or misleading. Turn nut counterclockwise to loosen. Lefty loosey, righty tighty.
Tools:
48 mm end wrench (yes, way big. 1 7/8" would probably also work)
54 mm spanner.
Other tools may work, but if your fan is as tight as mine was, good luck.
I made my own spanner using 3/16" X 1" steel. Simple flat pitchfork style with two parallel arms 54mm apart and about 3" long. Handle about 2' long. The arms fit to the outside of the water pump pulley mounting bolts (these are 10mm head bolts).
From above, slide the 54 mm spanner in around the pulley bolts and flush to pulley. Put the 48 mm wrench on the fan nut. Steadily and carefully apply massive force, holding the spanner carefully so it doesn't slip.
I just borrowed the tools from Autozone. They loan tools to customers for free, you just have to leave a deposit until you bring it back. The tool was very similar to what you made.
That's some good info! Rep points for that. You have any pics of the spanner you made?
Thanks. No pics, but here's how I made it.
Cut (2) pieces of stock 3" long. Lay flat on welding table, 54 mm apart.
Cut (1) piece of stock about 4" long. Lay flat on table, butting to one end of the other 2 pieces forming a "U".
Butt all seams together rather than overlap to keep tool as flat and thin as possible.
Weld together.
Weld handle to the 4" piece.
