My F250 is also a Californian, 83, EEC-III.

The computer is under the drivers seat.

The CPS gave the previous owner ongoing problems & he doctored the whole system, it now has a disguised DS2 in it (missing the vac advance). No smog testing here in NZ - only for visible tailpipe smoke.
At the first sign of ignition or emission trouble I'll replace it all with an MSD or similar & scrap the computer & feedback carb/smog gear too. Ford did not supply Duraspark on it's engines here at all, & diagnosis/support for EEC-III is non-existent

I will have to see if my 82 Lincoln manual set covers the EEC-III system and diagnosis. I seem to remember you have to apply a vacuum too the barometric sensor to put it in self diagnostic mode. If so I will scan it to pdf format and see if there is a place to post it on here. My site, oldschoolhotrodder.com had to come down due to the need for a major software update. Archion and I are still working on the redo and since both of us have full-time jobs, it just takes a while.

The EEC system is protected from reverse polarity by a main relay. I don't know how to test the relay but if you remove it you could probably get it tested at an auto parts store or just replace it.

Pointing to EEC main relay:

This may be of some help. Schematic of the entire EEC-III system:

" I have 12v on the + side of coil when cranking and 6V when in run. Is this OK..."

The run voltage is little low, should be around 9 to 10 volts with key on.

I found my book on the EECIII system, looks like the CPS and ecu controls the ignition module, not the way I though it did. Schematics are the best help!

The book I have is the Chilton's Electronic Engine Controls book#7535 it has all the EEC info/diagnostic up till 1985, you may want to get it, it has about 50 pages for diagnosing the EECIII system.

Horsepuller, that 302 I have does have EECIII(found the CPS),till someone swapped the dizzy out along with that yellow gromet DS box.
