I don't think you can get a 4R70W to bolt up to a 5.0/5.8. They only bolt up to the modular engines (4.6/5.4). The AODE will bolt up to the 5.0. The only difference between the two is that the 4R70W has a different gear set and a different output shaft. If you are planning on putting either of these transmissions in your '77 F100 they won't work. Both of these are computer controlled transmissions.
It sounds like you need an AOD. It will bolt up to the 5.0 and has no electonics in it. All it needs is the TV linkage hooked up.
I realize that, but Bauman engineering makes kits for using these on non-computer controlled engines. They said that a few of the did come on Windsor V8's, but I have no idea which ones they came on. If the output shaft is different, I should be looking at AOD-E's, and then I'll just get the 4R70W gearset, so I can have that 2.79 first gear, which should fit right in from what I've read. Does this make sense? I guess an AOD would be fine, as long as it had that 2" overdrive band, I'm not interested in tearing up OD bands, that's why I was looking into the AOD-E's to beging with. Thanks for the help, I'm trying to get this together so I can finally swap my rear end ratio for something in the range of 3.70 without losing my highway cruise speed. TK
I've got a 4r70w in my 95 f-150 with the 5.0. I'm actually pretty impressed with this tranny. I put a beating on it and its held up well. knock on wood.
