Can anyone tell me anything about this tranny. Like, why I had to go to Ford and Pay sixty bucks for a filter and gasket, or why none of the major part retailers around here had every heard of it. I asked in a earlier message about a shudder going from third to fourth, and haven't figured that out yet. The tv cable goes to a box on the fender, how do you adjust that? Someone told me that Ford started using th 4R70W in 96', and my truck is a 94'. It's really aggravating to not know anything about it so I would appreciate any and all info.
A 4R70W is an AOD-E, same tranny, different nomenclature, just as the E40D is now called the 4R100. The trans id computer-driven, no kickdown linkage, etc. Check out http://www.baumannengineering.com/ for info on this one
If you have the same condition my father's '95 had all you have to do to remedy your 3rd to 4th shuttering is drop the tranny pan and tighten the valve body to transmission bolts to factory torque specs. The fellow at our transmission shop said he has done this fix on alot of these Ford tranny's, our's is still good after over 50,000 since (FIX). I hope this helps in any way. Try it you'll like it!!!!
Hey bb79, you are a life (and aggravation) saver. Dropped the pan, put some torque on those puppies and good as new. Thanks for the advice. I did change the filter by the way.
To Strange Ranger, Thanks for the link. Good stuff there. Also for the heads up on the name change, I was baffled there for a minute.
Does anyone know what the torque specs are???? I am having the same problem with the shudder. I am also having a problem with a very hard 1 to 2 shift. Please help me.

I have this same shuddering problem and am going to change the fluid and filter soon. what exactly are you referring to when you say the "Valve Body"? Can you describe it, so that I don't tighten the wrong part? Thanks, Rick (1995 F150 302 with the 4R70W trans)
Would you please tell me what the transmission code is that is on the sticker of your driver's side door.
I have a 1996 F-150 with the 302 and auto trans. My code is U and I have been told that it is an AOD-E and not the 4R70W, but I think I was told wrong. It makes a difference in the specs and procedures to follow.
I too have the shuddering sensation. It almost seems as though the trans has shifted into the next higher gear too early and seems to be "bogging down". I try to remember to disable the OD and it cures the problem. This works well as long as I remember to select OD when on the highway and above 55mph.
My truck only has 30K miles on it so the trans should not be giving trouble yet. I just had the fluid flushed and filled and added a bottle of Lubegard. It may help some, but if not I will drop the pan and torque the valve body.
I miss my old C-6 trans ( 87 F-150 ) that just kept on runnin and runnin......

John, Mine has "U" on the tag and it is a 4R70W. I just drained "all" of the fluid and replaced the filter today. Also torqued the Valve Body bolts and the shudder is gone! Could'nt believe it!! Not sure if the fluid and filter change did it or the tightening of the bolts. Mine did it no matter if I used OD or not! Usually around 40 or 45 MPH. It would feel like a miss and bog down. Now if I give it a little gas in that range, it just goes! I used plain old Mercon fluid and a no-name filter for what it's worth. Hope this helps! Rick PS- The shifting to a higher gear that you're talking about is the torque converter locking up.
Can anybody tell me where I can get a core, or a working 4R70W for a 302 engine? I need to put an overdrive in to makeup for the 3.70's I want to put in the rear, and I've read enough to confirm that this was the best automatic that Ford has made yet. The only problem is that I can't find a core at a decent price to rebuild. Thanks for the replies. TK
