Do you have a turbo ? lots of guys with turbo's have straight piped their trucks (I intend to) and been happy with it, the turbo acts as a muffler to a point. If no turbo you're talking about an unmuffled big block V-8. You can guess how that would sound.
Yeah it has the Banks wastegated turbo with the 3.5" exhaust thought that I might try and eliminate the muffler and maybe it would cool down the engine as well as increase ponies
Others will join in, but my theory is that you could see a slight increase in power, and slight drop in EGT's by losing the muffler.
If you try it be sure to post. I have the exact same system on a parts truck, eventually going on mine (like after my shop gets built !), and I plan to straight pipe it.
with the banks turbo it will sound really awesome!! i cut my muffler out and ran the exhaust in front of the rear tire and removed the rest of the pipe on my factory turbo.you hear alot more whistle.the only thing you will notice as far as noise will be at higher rpm's.
I was worried about the noise on my turboed 7.3 but these guys talked me into it. I have a 3 1/2" straight pipe at the factory spot behind the tire and I love it now. It really isn't that loud and I did notice some power and a little lower egt's. I say cut it out too!!!
I noticed my egt’s lowered about 100 degrees. I went from a stock 2.5” to a FlowPro 3”. I think it sounds good with out blowing you out of the cab, even under load. Most likely it would not be loud enough for these kids.

Yes. It sounds amazing. My buddy has a CUCV M1009 with the N/A GM 6.2 and he runs duals, no crossover, no mufflers, just pipe. The thing sounds like two Harleys with drag pipes chained together. (less cylinders, but you get the idea) The raspy, machinegun gasser-type blast produced is just nuts.
I've heard 6.9s running open pipes, and their sound matches the description above very closely, if not slightly beefier.
I once ran a smallblock Pontiac 400 open with a 3" single that was only about five feet of pipe total. Open N/A diesels blow that motors voice out of the water. Maybe not in "coolness" but surely in decibels!
just installed my 3 inch downpipe from banks and my 4 inch striaght pipe exhaust ... and i love the way it sounds ... turbo sounds nicer ... actually the restricted factory downpipe and 5inch stack sounded louder maybe because it was closer to the cab .. still luv my new set up...
Mine is gunna have dual 3.5" straight stacks. Talk about big block V8.... also, the diesels are about 21-1 CR compared to 12-1 in a modestly built engine.
We have a 69 F-8000 on the farm with a straight stacked CAT 1160 in it.... muahaha.. no better sound in the world... but VERY loud... underpasses will make you deaf lol
Back in the 60's and 70's, big trucks with turbos came from the factory with straight pipes.
The 67 Diamond T with the 335 Cummins is part of where my crickets came from.
Turbo so it came from te factory with 4" straight piped stacks.
Cab insulation and sound control in modern trucks is much better.
