Does anyone have a straight pipe installed on an Ex? I want to do it but don't want to sacrifice the hearing and sanity of my rear passengers. Unless of course it works really good and sounds cool.:7
First off, I have yet to receive my X, so my experience really is questionable. I owned a 1999 Expedition with a 5.4 gasser and a straight pipe. It sounded great, but that's a gasser and they are clearly a different breed. One thing that is the same though, you have a pipe flowing all the way down the vehicle and exiting right under the rear quarter panel. Because of this, I had an amazing drone/growl noise that passengers hated, I loved. And I don't mean a slight noise increase, it was LOUD! I say go for it and the worst case is you end up throwing a muffler in after a while. At least, when I get my X that's what I'll do. I hear all kinds of people saying it sounds great or it sounds like crap, etc. I always test for myself listen to what people have to say and then go your own route.
I had a straight pipe on my 2002 PSD X for about a month untill i had to change it. The benefit is that the turbo can be heard like crazy =) The bad thing is that it sounds like a 35 year old lawnmower when you are just crusing around, the best way to describe it would be a "flutter". Take a listen to someone who has one before you go and hack up your exhaust...my two cents......
Why would you want to annoy everyone around you just to sound like some loud, old beater? Personally, I would rather listen to tunes. Loud noise just for the sake of loud noise doesn't make any sense to me. Loud exhaust does not equal power or economy. Go a different route if you want to keep friends and family.
Also, no offense meant, just my opinion. To each his own.
Go for it. You could always do what doctorsmack41 said. I have true duals using 2 1/4" pipe with an eighteen inch glasspack on each pipe on my F150 with a 4.6. Sure is loud when I get on it but is quiet when I am just cruising even at speeds of 70 MPH.
Before i did a straight pipe I would go with duals out the back and flowmasters. the sound is sweet and deep but not loud. A 5.4 sounds like a 427 but quiet. teh straights chrome tips look good out the back too. If you want it quiet inside, make sure the atraights stick past the bumper.
