ok, I am an a$$. If I apply the brake while in N, the truck goes straight into 4L.
It still takes longer than I would expect to get into 4H, but that is less of a big deal than not being able to get in to 4L.
I may as well get more schooling while I am here.....So with the electronic transfer case, do I need to lock the hubs manually, or is that done via vacuum? If it is does via vacuum, what is the point in having the manual hubs on there?

Thanks for the info.

If all is well, the hubs will vacuum actuate on their own. If they don't, you have a vac leak. There is an easy test for it though- if your vents default to defrost when you throw the 4x4 switch then you have an ESOF leak. The reason for the manual hubs is so that if you do have an ESOF leak, you can still have 4x4 by manually locking the hubs.
Here is a picture that I just took of my transfer case linkage in all it's rusty glory.
One trip through a dirt road in Colorado that the road crew was putting this de-ice chemical down in prep for the winter did all that damage.
It was pristine before that.
I believe the NV271 and NV273 may well be identical inside the case. The electric actuator on the 273 mounts in the same location as the shift linkage on the 271.
Now weather or not the case would have to be opened to convert it.......
You guys with the 273 also have your shifting controlled by the GEM module. So there might be issues there with the electrical connector left hanging.
Well, just for the sake of discussion, what is the differences between the two transfer cases?

I thought I remembered someone else wanting to do this, and they said the casting was different (they had both in front of them), and there wasnt a place to put the mechanical lever in place? I would crawl under the early 99, and my truck and verify, but its pouring rain and I need to get ready to leave in the AM for TS. I can verify when I get back, but Im sure someone can do it faster.
As far as slow shifting into 4wd, if you ever have that issue again, while on the brakes, slowly let off and let the truck coast just an inch or so. Sometimes thats all it takes.
