My '93 f150's 4x4 dash light no longer lights up when I switch into 4 wheel drive. I opened the dash and replaced the light bulb but that didn't fix the problem. I'm now trying to test the switch on the transfer case but having no luck getting ohm meter leads on recessed switch pins to check the switch its self. Can I unscrew the switch from the transfer case without having problems - like transfer case lubricant leaking from the opening once I remove the switch?
I dont think it will leak more than a couple drops. It is higher than the fill plug, isnt it? It might be easier to jump the connector terminals on the harness side and see if the light comes on.
To madpogue - Already tried mini alligator clips, but terminals are severely recessed and only had room in opening for 1 alligator clip on one terminal. Thanks anyway.
Another option - if you can get your hands on a pigtail connector for the switch from a junked truck, cut it off, and use it as an extension connector for the meter. Or maybe you can buy the pigtail online.
IIRC it's one part. One wire is for the 4x4 light and the other is for the LOW RANGE light, and they both complete the circuit by grounding through the t-case case.
Oh, come to think of it, that means the OP should NOT jumper the wires as suggested above. Also it wouldn't do any good to ohm check between the two terminals, since they're separate circuits. The ohm check would be from each terminal, separately, to ground. Sorry, my EVTM is buried under a bunch of other stuff in the truck, otherwise I'd dig it out for the wire colors and terminal positions.
It's a double-throw (or is it double-pole?...) switch. It's in effect two switches in one part. When you shift to 4HI, one of the wires grounds to the case, which turns on the 4X4 light. When you shift to 4LO, both wires ground to the case, which turns on both the 4X4 and LOW RANGE lights.
He has not come back and said if he has a Mechanical Shift or Electronic Shift as I asked in post #6 above.
When he does I will post a wiring diagram that may help him.
They are not wired the same for the lamps in the cluster.
Ok it is one switch. So the easiest test would be to ground each terminal where the harness plugs into the swuch and see if the lights come on. If th ey do your switch is bad.
