My 89 f150 with 351 and C6 developed a bad vibration from about 3000-3500 rpm in any gear and even in nuetral. my intial reaction was something was wrong with the engine since it did it in nuetral but after inspecting everything externally (harmonic balncer and ring gear) i had my doubts. To be sure though I disconected the engine from tranny, ran the engine and the vibration was gone. Now not being really familiar with the internals of an automatic i'm wondering if there is something wrong with the torque converter or is something else in the tranny that turns in neutral could be causing the vibration. The tranny doesn't seem to hook up as hard as it used to either. I should probably mention that the tranny was rebiult about 5000 Km ago and a shift kit and 2800 stall torque converter were installed and all of these symtoms started about the 4000 km range. Before this when it would shift under hard acceleration it would just about put your head through the back window. now the intial shift is spongy, but once hooked up there seems to be no slippage. anybody have any advice. thanks.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Sep-02 AT 09:31 PM (EST)]I had a converter come apart internally and it caused a balance problem like you described. I replaced the converter and it cured it. I unbolted the converter as you did and ran the motor to isolate the problem.A failed stator or turbine fin will also cause a torque shudder under acceleration.Double check your fron pump bushing if you tear it down. there is a chance that a failure has trashed it, the front pump and filled the transmission and cooler with metal. If it hasn't you are lucky. Typical hints are trash in the pan, erradict shifts(trash in gov.) etc...
