I had to have my 2005 ford expedition 5.4 with 71000 miles transmission rebuilt about 1 year ago. Ever since this was done I have felt a vibration in the truck. Usually appears to be worst in park and neutral. Before the tranny was replaced the truck ran great no vibration and shifted smooth. Absolutely no signs of a bad transmission. The new transmission seems to let the engine rev up much higher and shifts much harder when driving it. Old transmission shifted smooth and clean. Basically the truck just seems to run rough all around. Brought it back to the tranny shop and so far not much success with them. Talked to the dealership and they are sure that it is something in the tranny or the tourk converter. Does anybody have any idea what could be causing this issue before I keep throwing money at it. Keep in mind I still have 12 months left on the warranty of the new tranny and torch converter. It has been driving me crazy for a year now. Spark plugs were also changed out during the tranny install a year ago. Please help!!!!!!!
I would assume something is wrong with the trans, The transmission is controlled by the pcm, I would get a scanner hooked up and drive around watching the real time data on the scanner to see if everything is normal. Normally a hard shift is because the valve body, but remember when they rebuilt it they might have used different parts than the oem, which could change the characteristics of the trans and the way it runs.
Had it at the shop on Friday. They drove it and also hooked it up to scanner and saw no codes. They did tell me that my expedition has to types of torque converters for it. A high stall and low stall. They are going to replace the torque converter Monday to a high stall. They cannot fond out what type mine had in it originally. When they did the rebuild they also put in a shift kit. Any thoughts as to the type of torque converter?
Expedition problem with transmission and rough idle fixed
After getting it to the shop they put in a new high stall torque converter. After a year of feeling like my truck wasn't running right after the new transmission was installed I am glad to say my 05 expedition is running outstanding again. I have smooth shifting, no more rough idle, you can hardly tell the truck is turned on it is so quiet. And best of all it has power again, I can get on the interstate now at a high speed and it doesn't sound like the engine is going to blowup. So the issue was one of 2 things, the torque converter that was put in the truck with the new tranny was bad (which was a low stall), or the high stall torque converter fixed the issue. I am ecstatic that this issue is fixed and I hope if someone else is having this same problem my post will help them with there issue.
