Vibration and Drive Shaft angle?

Can someone clarify this?

I have been reading the posts about vibrations and drive shaft angles.
It appears for many of the posts that the vibrations get worse as you
go faster.
But a few posts suggest that it gets worse when you take your foot
off the gas and coast at high speed and that the vibrations disappear
when accelerating.

So which is it? If you have a drive shaft angle problem, do the vibrations
disappear when accelarating at high speeds or are they always there?

I also read a few posts about a black rubber vibration damper.
Is this something to check before you suspect a bad drive shaft angle?
How?

I currently have the vibration problem only when coasting (foot off the gas)
and the noise from the vibration appears to get louder as I slow down.
It also feels like there is a drag on the truck when I try to coast.
The vibration is still present when I put the tranny into nuetral and coast.

There is also a small clunk noise when the brakes are initially applied. It sounds like something in the chassis shifts slightly. Could this be an indication of a loose motor/tranny mount?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Grcutter

Almost sounds like it could possibly be a rear end problem also.

Clunk noise when braking, could be a caliper problem.

My mechanic called and said he thinks the vibration is due to the torque converter not releasing. He said that he can feel the vibration in the brake
pedal and that it shudders all the way to a stop; therefore it must be the torque converter not releasing.

Is this a plausible explanation?

The transmission fluid is crystal clear and there do not appear to be any of the more traditional transmission problems like slippage.

those indications you describe sound exactly like the effects of your U-joints being worn out... try replacing them first.. if that dont work( bet it does!).. then id space the carrier bearing to the point your two peice driveline forms a straight line.

Replace all the U joints?

The vibration sounds and feels like it is coming more from up front
than from the rear.

Could it be just the U joints from the drive shaft that goes to the front
for 4WD?
Is that even possible if 4WD is not engaged?

Thanks for all your help!

Wow. I am reading down and thinking U-joints and then see the part about the mechanic. I believe I would go over and kick his butt for almost getting you to cough up a couple hundred for a sixty dollar porblem.

no kidding, definently sounded like u-joints. If it was the TCC not disengaging, while you slowed down, the downshifts would be harsh and the motor would bog down when you where in 1st gear slowing to a stop.
