Ya, but at least the fan blade only hit my finger once and my timing light 3 times. Im having a major problem using the light though. My ignition system is upgraded and there is a lot of interference. so the timing light is basically a flashlight. Now im just doing it by feel. Im still not sure what i should set the timing on now becasue im running a 4bbl and performance ignition. stock setting is 8 btdc.

i have mine set at 10* with 4BBl and MSD dizzy, runs outstanding.. make sure you pull the clip that you use for the timing light #1 wire away from other spark plug wires..

it may just be that its the cheapest timing light i can find. 15bucks at harbor freight. what I was trying was to just hold the clip in the vicinity above the wire until it flashed slower... that did not really work. I tried to set it at 10 btdc while doing this but when i took it for a ride it was pretty bad. I may have just been getting too much signal from the other wires. ( im running 9mm ford racing wires)

You can advance the timing 1 degree for every 2,000 ft. above sea level..to compensate for the altitude...

Did you remove the spout connector if you have one, or the vacuum line from the distributor before setting the base timing?

10 degrees BTDC is do-able in nearly every engine I've ever owned.

ya i pulled and plunged the vac advance hose. but i didn't plug the actual advancer on the distributor.

One more question. When i went to look at my marks, some one had marked tdc with white paint. why would they mark tdc instead of where it needed to be ( 8 btdc) ? i think some one had my engine timed to tdc.

Sounds like my harmonic balancer. There is only one notch in it and a stupid round hole as a pointer.

It is impossible to shine a timing light into the hole because the alternator is right in the way. I had to time it by ear and guestimate where I'm at BTDC.

Could be but i don't think my lifters are adjustable. that's a possibility though.

Thats the exact problem i had. I though that hole ( mine has a bolt in it) was the pointer at first. but then i looked past the inner part of the upper radiator hose between the water pump and the air pump and i was able to see the pointer with a flashlight. Maby you have one too but just cant see it from the angles your looking from. I can take a pic if you want.

No worries. I timed it by ear last time and it's all good.

Only problem now is that I have a blown head gasket. I'm working on swapping in the 300 six from my other truck.
