Here's a question for any of the automatic trans experts out there. An auto trans has 80 or 90,000 miles on it. Mechanically the unit is working peoperly but the trans fluid is way burnt. The transmission has never been serviced, no fluid changes have ever been done. I've had several people tell me not to change it now, that if ya change the fluid now it'll ruin the trans. What gives? Is this bull (sounds like it to me) or is there some validity to this. Appreciate any input you guys can pass along. Thanks
I bought a 97 with 106K and the fluid was burnt. 20K later I'm still fine. I added an external cooler and fluid filter, one of those kits that uses an oil filter. If new fluid does loosen anything up, you want to have a way to trap it and lets face it, burnt means it's getting too hot. Pan transmission filters are on the suction end of the pump and hardly filter out anything. If your transmission would fail with new fluid, it would fail with the old fluid soon enough too. You might be better with a drain and fill every 10K for a couple of times rather than a flush. I put extra magnets in the pan. I'm taking apart an A4LD that had tons of metal in it for more than 4 years. It kept running with 6 month fluid changes and cleaning the pan. Sheared some metal parts but clutches and other parts are still perfect after 200K. Only problem I can forsee is in the valve body and that could be cleaned without removing the transmission. One thing I have found is loose valve body bolts as the gaskets age. Caution these only torque to about 8 ft-lb, which is about nothing!
