When I re-geared I chose my gears with this method.
Determine how fast you normally drive
mine was 65 or 70 on interstate
Determine how much rpm you're willing to turn at that sustained speed.
say 2300 rpm
Find and use rpm/engine speed/tire diameter calculator. Commonly available on the net.
I ended up with 3.90 and am very happy as a result.
