Couple questions about replacing 4.6 engine

I have a 1999 X with the 4.6 Windsor engine and it has given me many years and many miles of faithful service so I am now living up to my promise to my truck to give it a new heart.

So I am looking for feedback on what place to buy a remanufactured engine from. Currently looking at gator engines. I know Jasper is the most popular but Jasper is 3200 and gator is 1800-big difference in price but not sure if its worth the difference. Any experience anyone can share?

Next question-there is a specail tool needed to remove the engine from my truck. 303-F047. I am all about buying the right tool for the right job but $300 for a very simple looking device I am going to use once is something I am having a hard time swallowing. Anyone know where I can rent one? Anyone have a used one they would like to part with?

Thanks for the help

Russell

It's my understanding that if you first remove the intake manifold, there is enough clearance to remove the engine with just a regular hoist. Same thing when it goes back in.

I just bought a remanufactured engine from Powertrain Products out of Deleware. It was not for an expedition, but anopther application.

I paid an ASE mechanic to put it in as side work, he did a great job and the engine has been great. He was impressed with the quality as well.

They shipped mine to me free and free core pick up. They also do not charge you the core for 30 days, so it isnt like pay and then get a credit.

The engine I got was $1599 for a 4.3 v6 and a Jasper one was $2100.

I read a couple bad reviews on Gator someplace, dont remember where and they were about $350 more than Powertrain Products.

I had good service from them and they were great to deal with. Answered my 1000 questions all same day via e-mail and the guy was super nice on teh phone too.

Good luck!

I neglected to mention, Powertrain Products engines come with a 3 year UNLIMITED mileage warranty.

I am also NOT affiliated with them, just a happy customer.

I would avoid Jasper Junk. True story. My dad needed a new 302 in his 90 Lincoln so the dealership recommended a Jasper reman engine as it was cheaper than a direct Ford replacement. Well, long story short, it took 4, yes 4, Jasper engines before we got one that did not burn oil or have some stupid problem with it. It took over a year to get it right. I'm not kidding but I'd avoid them like the plague.

I filled out the online form from Performance Products so I appreciate the input afsigma21.

As far as regular engine hoist-it is pretty tight between the engine and the firewall for half of the block. I can definitely see why they made the special lifting bracket.

I bought all the "Installation kit" parts from Rockauto and got them for about $240 and was able to get almost all OEM parts.

Summit had a special sale of 4.6L Ford engines with everything including tranny, they advertised at $3,800. I never bought one, just saying. Worth checking their site.

PS, found a link : http://store.summitracing.com/partde...w=1&N=700+150+

I had to have a new (reman) tranny put in my 2001 Expy and it was $3200 alone, althought that was labor too, but that is not a bad price!

I know. Fixing the tranny on the Expy is quite expensive. When I saw that setup I thought "forget it, tranny goes out I will just get this whole thing and have a new truck" .

OK
I have decided on Marshall engines.

And a local mechanic said forget the tool, just hook a chain where the tool would go.

I have everything unbolted and ready to go except the top trans bolts and engine mounts.
Do I unbolt the 2 large bolts on each side that hold the engine mount to the truck frame, or the single large bolt on each side that seems to hold the 2 pieces of the engine mount together, or do I undolt the 3 bolts per side that are basically the bracket between the motor mounts and the block itself.

How do I remove the oil dipstick tube?

Also, does the exhaust manifold need to come off before I take the engine out? I have it unbolted from the y-pipe.

And when removing the engine, does it come back and then up, or both at the same time?

Sorry for so many questions.

Neither Autozone or Advance has the manual for my truck.

I also signed up for the Helm online service manual a week ago and when I try to log in it says "still processing your order"

If anybody has a service manual handy I would really appreciate any input.

Thanks
