Speedometer problems

Speedometer problems

My speedo hasnt been working since I bought the truck. I took the the cable off the trans tested it with my cordless drill and it moved the speedo gauge. So I took the Vss out and hooked my drill to the little gear drive, and that moved the gauge too. Where the heck to go from here?

Btw, this is on a 1989 f-450. Any help is appreciated.

Also I searched these forums and never really found anything pertanant.

Not sure f the plastic gear on the VSS can totally disentegrate or not.

Is the gear there? is it in good shape with no busted teeth?

I've had to replace the gear on my 87 Ranger twice thanks to broken teeth.

If the gear is OK then it looks like the gear inside the trans is broken.

I have no idea how to replace that.

Yeah the gears look great.

Is there supposed to be a wire hooked up the the little connector attached to the Vss? Mine has none.

Should be 2 wires which feed speed info to the cruise control brain.

On second thought, thats how my 87 Ranger is wired.

Does your F-450 have ABS brakes? Or more likely rear only ABS/RABS?

If it does the speed sensor for the RABS might also feed info to the cruise control brain.

Fortunately I bought my 87 Ranger new so I was able to just say hell no i dont want the RABS option.

If you like doing electrical repairs the easy way, you might still be able to buy the 89 F-450 EVTM/electrical & vacuum troubleshooting manual at helminc.com.

Well, no Cruise control on this truck. Might drive around town looking for a late 80's F-series to crawl under, to have a look.

Cleaned the whole cable/Vss assembly, put it back together and took it for a spin. No change. Still doesnt work. :/

Ouch, it looks like the gear inside the trans is broken then.

BTW, I just took a quick look at the wiring diagram for my Ranger & -at least on it- the VSS also feeds speed info to the PCM/powertrain control module.

This is probably one of the inputs the PCM uses to adjust ignition timing & fuel delivery.
