Hi everybody, I'm having a problem with my speedo, it's not working, and I need some help. Let me also say that I have no automotive experience what so ever, I've always wanted to be able to work on cars and trucks and I love old fords so this is where I started. First off about my truck, its a 1975 f100 with a 390 and a manual tranny. The motor and tranny are not original to the truck at least I think so because the vin decodes to an automatic.
So I'm trying to figure out why my speedo is not working, my first thought was that either the gauge or speedo cable, so I pulled out the cable from the tranny, which was no small feat in my driveway, and I hooked it up to a drill and ran the drill in reverse, the speedo ran just fine. So cable and gauge good right?
My next thought is that when I took the cable out of the tranny there was a clip that was holding the cable into the tranny, should that be a flat piece of metal? Mine is bent up, could that be keeping the cable from reaching all the way into the tranny? I attached a pick of the clip I'm talking about. Any help would be much appreciated.

Reason: fix pics
Darn I was hoping it would be as easy as straightening a piece of metal. I didn't change the tranny I just got the truck a month ago I only know its not original because of the vin on the door. So here is what I know about the tranny its a 4 speed 4x4 attached to a 390...and thats about all I know. Where can I look on it for more? I'm a complete newbie when it comes to this. Also is the driven gear the white one on the cable or the one in the tranny. Thanks!

I'm no good at ID-ing transfer cases, I'm more 2WD /auto myself. The gear on the end of the cable is the driven gear, the one on the tailshaft of the tranny is the drive gear.
The driven gear in your pictures is not very clear but it looks like it might be somewhat worn. The drive gear may also be worn. Shine a flashlight through the hole to look at it and also feel it with your finger. The teeth should be sharp and all the same from one side of the gear to the other. If they appear to be worn flat that is likely the problem and the gears will need to be replaced.
