I originally posted this problem referring to the noise as a "rumbling." In talking with a transmission guy I learned that it is actually called a "shutter." He recommended rebuilding the transmission and told me mine may last a day or months.
After reading a few posts I decided to try running with the O/D off and much to my surprise, no "shutter." So now I am puzzled, if this is my torque converter failing then why does it shutter while in O/D only.
Today I went back to running in O/D and can now say my tranny "shutters" only at 48 mph and not all the time. It does not "shutter" when the O/D is off.
Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks,
Don
Shudder is from your torque converter. This is why Ford moved from plain Mercon to Mercon V. Contact your Ford dealer for solution, it would be 50 times cheaper then rebuilding transmission. For my 2002 Escape, dealer replaced ATF and reprorgrammed PCM under some recall, so it was free of charge.
Thanks for your replies.
Yes the fluid has been changed as recommended. However, the last time I had it done at a generic lube place. I did sense some confusion with their staff and now I wonder if they used the correct fluid. This shutter began after that fluid change but that could have also been coincidental as it came on so slowly. I will try an fluid change at a Ford dealer.
Thanks
Don
I had a Ford dealer change the transmission fluid today and they used Mercon V. I drove about 100 miles afterwards and did not get any "shutter" at all.
I am in the mountains of TN and I drove lots of inclines. Transmission is also shifting much smoother. I am cautiously optimistic that my problem has been resolved. I will consider it resolved if I can drive 1000 miles without any "shutter." I will post again at that mileage.
Thanks
Don
Bad News! At about 300 miles the shutter returned and now at 600 miles is almost as bad as before the fluid change.
I have options but which way to go???
1. I have read that Dr. Tranny Shudder Fix, and additive, that is said to work until the fluid is changed. Cost estimate, $10
2. Have it diagnosed at Ford for $100 and probably have the torque converter replaced.
Cost estimate, somewhere around $800
3. I already spoke to a rep at Mr. Transmission and they said they will not replace the torque converter without rebuilding the entire tranny. Cost estimate, about $3000.
Comments appreciated.

It was $6, I think. I put some in my E150 van, which has had a very slight shudder since new. I had the fluid changed at 42k, now has 65k. The additive seems to have made a bunch of difference almost immediately. Don't think you have much to lose trying it. The term is shudder, not shutter, for what it's worth...
Hey, let us know if the shudder fixx makes a difference for you. It's almost counter intuitive to make the trans fluid more slippery (which the shudder fixx does), but that seems to do the trick in a lot of cases.
There was a fellow on the forums who ran a fleet of Crown Vics for a municipality, and Ford told him to run some limited slip additive in all of them--similar function to the shudder fixx. (6 bucks at NAPA)

Have your front axles checked. I had one replaced (right front) and it resolved the shudder I was experiencing. o5 xlt v6 auto 4wd 108.000 on it
George,
As you said, I found the Dr. Tranny Shudder Fix at NAPA for $6.57 tax included. I put it in and drove about 60 miles. No shudder at all and the transmission is shifting better than when it was new. I hope it stays that way. Do you know how often to use Dr. Tranny? Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for the post, but I am fairly certain my problem is the torque converter. After changing the fluid the shudder went away for almost 300 miles. Now with Dr. Tranny the shudder is once again gone.

Great news, Don. I've never used the stuff before, although I have read that it might need a refresh periodically.
I plan to do full fluid changes at maybe 30-40k miles in the future in my van, and would probably put the stuff in upon a new fluid change, or maybe when I feel the slightest hint of a shudder...
I think you are on the right track. You may need another Merc V fluid flush too. My new F150 had some contaminated fluid that caused a shudder at 45 mph, and I had to do two flushes over about 5000 miles to get the shudder to go away. I also ran the Dr. Tranny shudder fix 1/2 tube, and also Lubgard RED which is excellent. I run Lubgard RED in all my auto trans now and it is doing a fine job. Shifting is smooth but crisp. I would not talk to that tranny shop again, they should know better and probably do. I drop my pans clean and replace the fluid every 30K to 50K miles depending on the vehicle.
I am the OP and I thought it was time for an update.
My 05' Escape started with the tranny shutter at about 75k miles. I started using Dr. Tranny's Shutter Fix and it works for a while. I have also had several transmission flushes with mercon V without any help. I am now just over 131k miles and I still get the tranny shutter. I have asked many dealers service people and none have provided an answer. For this reason I would never buy another Escape. I will keep putting the Dr. Tranny's Shutter Fix in as long as I own the car.
