My new F250 is in the body shop I am stuck driving a 1996 f150 with auto tranny. Here is a list of the symtoms. no odometer display, no speedometer, HARD shifts, oh and the air bag light blinks but might be unrelated. This is a spare company truck and I think the only one to use it latey is the boss'es yard man. I know I had to go pull it out of the mud two weeks ago. Dont know if problem existed before that or not. Any suggestions? If I get it in the few days my truck is in the shop I could make some points with the boss!!! Thanks
It could be the Vehicle Speed Sensor, located on top of the rear differential. Check to make sure the wire is attached and didn't get yanked off. If the wire is still attached, the sensor may be bad.
The transmission shifts depending on, among other things, the speed of the vehicle, if the speed sensor is not working, or on its way out, funny things start to happen, a bouncing speedometer accompanied with random gear shifts, and usually your ABS light will come on.
could be the PSOM also... I hear that will cause the odometer to have problems, and will also cause shifting issues as well. the vss is a good place to start cause its easy to get to, the fuses as well, but if you don't find problems there check the psom on the back of the speedo for broken connections as I hear the soldering in some years got pretty shotty. The only problem if it is the psom is that you can't buy one from anywhere besides the dealership or a scrap yard. I've seen clusters at the yard for about forty bucks, but someone told me that part would cost around four hundred at the dealership and they require that they do the install
On our much abused 92 f150 the fuse that subford mentioned kept blowing. The wiring for the OD lockout button, on the column, was shorting out.

Thanks guys. one fuse fixed speedometer, odometer, dome light, power mirrors, cargo light, and door chime! Come to find out problem with truck started months ago! thats why they took it home and were using it for yard work. I washed it and drove it 200 miles on a service call, ran like a champ.
