At the last round of bailout talks the way I understood was merging with fiat was the only option for any help for the govt. To mee this seems to give fiat a lot of leverage.
I figgured out how to see my rep points and saw I got some from number dummy. I thought this was cool, even if it was for a post that had nothing to do with idi knowledge.
Have you guys seen the ford fiesta diesel in europe? Now THAT is what I call a good compact car. Fast, light and economical. Superb crash safety too.
How about the diesel ranger (7000lb towing capacity) or falcon ute (road warrior) from australia?
Then theres the 3/4 ton trucks in argentina that use the cummins 3.9L that are rated at 25 MPG (clone of the superduty). Argentina's fords have used diesels since something like the late 60s I think.
Maybe it is all the EPA's falt that north america gets all the crappy light vehicles, but I think theres more to it then that.
*stands up on soap box*
I demand passenger cars that can peal rubber and get 50 MPG!!
I DEMAND diesel trucks that can pull a house over and get 20-30 MPG!!!!
The reason I read that ford gave for not making the fiesta for our market was they would not sell enough of them here to profit with our buyers. So I say you are right to a large extent even all I ever here is green this green that. I have gotten to the point that if a place advertizes anything green I no longer do business there, so one day I will be able to save all my money because there will be nowhere left to spend it.
Ford didn't take bail out money because they didn't want to be told what to do by the only corperation taking a bigger loss than them, the goverment has absolutely no idea how to manage money. All the auto makers should have filed chapter 11 years ago restrucktured got read of all the union workers and higher people back at what they are worth. I've toured auto plants there are almost no jobs a trained monkey couldn't do. It is not skilled labor to put on the same bolt in the same spot all day long, I've heard of janeters making $30hr because they had woked there so long no janeter is woth that, in todays economy there are hundreds of people that would take the jobs at the factory for much less pay and these people would be highly over qualifyed. I would feel no remose what so ever for any union worker that would be affected by this because they brought it on them selfs if they weren't demanding to be over paid they wouldn't have to charge as much for a new car to make a profit so they would sell more causing there to be more money rolling around in the ecconmy.
I think Ford went with the other three thinking they would ask for money later. Then they saw how bad/stupid of an idea that was/is and thought better of it.
Oh and as for all the neat modles of cars not sold in the US they dont meet most of our safety requirements as well as the EPA not wanting us to have fule efficent vehicles.
I'm not sure if the european fiesta will meet domestic safety standards, but it is far from being an unsafe car in the latest version. There are some strange enviromental and safety rules over here thats for sure. Almost as if they are intentionally beating their own purpose.
