Can anyone give me a heads up as to why I'm getting this? Tried to do a search, but no luck....maybe it's just me being a noob. Truck's been doing this for a while now. Oh and it only does it on cold start up....after running for a while and run into say, the beer store, it starts up fine with no smoke.
If the temps are really cold outside, some white smoke is normal. However, the amount of white smoke will increase depending on your glow plugs. If you're getting a larger amount of smoke, then you probably have several glow plugs going out.
I've got two of them on my truck that are bad (heck, they are still the originals, so I got some decent mileage out of them), and my truck smokes a bit more than it should on cold starts.
Thanks for the replies. The smoke is a bit excessive in my opinion (never used to get any before about 4 months ago) and it is only on cold starts. Looks like it's unanimous about the glow plugs. How do I determine a bad one from a good one? Is replacing glow plugs something I could tackle myself or is a mechanic recommended? I am somewhat mechanically inclined. I really need to get myself a shop manual.
