Bouncy speedo?

I'm sure this has been covered before but my speedo starts to bounce after 60mph especially around 70. It will vary from 70 to 80 drives me nuts then other days it stays put. The truck has 83K original miles. Do you think it has a wore cable??

Try,
__making sure that the cable is fully engaged into the speedo head.

I had the bouncing problem too, just doing this stopped it.

try some of the graphite powder lubricant. or, a speedo cable isnt that expensive, just get a new one. it could also be the speedometer itself needs lubed.

The speedometer itself isn't lubed.

Inside the speedo cable's housing is a woven steel core...it's supposed to be lubed with either graphite or white grease. If white grease is used...use it sparingly.

Another cause could be worn teeth on the plastic DRIVEN speedo gear that's on the end of the cable.

The gears are available from Ford, the most expensive one is $3.47.

I had that problem. Cured it with a healthy dose of white lithium grease. I took the cable out of the jacket, still on the truck, and sprayed the be-jesus
out of it. re-inserted the cable and no more bouncy. Occasionally, it will act up, but no where near what it was before. Its like I got a whole new speedo cable. Kinda like that hooked on fonics deal.....it werked fer me!! ( no...
really, it did!!!)

Did you actually leave the jacket in the truck and pulled the cable out like sitting in the cab or did you completely remove the cable assembly from the truck them pulled out the cable??

My 79 was doing that at slow speed, put a new cable in and didn't help, took the speedometer out and had lubricated it and cured the problem.
