A Volant box is sealed and draws ambient air. Now whether or not it's any different than stock is up to someone who has measured intake temps.

I can say that with my stock intake on my V10, the intake temps are equal to the ambient air temps and a (supposed) CAI is worthless if my aim is to drop intake temps. But my Avalanche always reads 6°-8° hotter than ambient. Not sure how a sealed factory air box can be such a large heatsink as to heat moving air that quickly but whatever...

More flow is fine. So if that is your goal understand that a CAI bought to increase flow usually only actually does so at Wide Open Throttle or if you have forced induction, like Tylus does. Otherwise your throttle plate is the largest restriction.

I highly suggest that nobody use a K&N filter on EFI vehicles. The filters allow too much grit and other particulate to pass...or they are so heavily oiled, they foul sensors.

They work great on carb'd motors because you can get enough oil on the filter to prevent dirt.

fords original setup with the REAL cold air cuz its being pulled from outside the engine bay so its colder makes sence. you just dont get the volume of air but you can only take in and burn so much air.

S&B has a filter that uses fords original outside cold air with a K&N like set up. i was told they are high quality and good but i never seen one or herd of one who has one. id buy one if i has the cash.

id say save your money buy a drop in and get a tuner.

if you really want one. knock yourself out lol.
I suggest that you at least look at the design of a product before you cast aspersions at it

the Volant is an enclosed air box that sucks air from 3 different spots. Unless you are stopped and idling, the Volant box is drawing air from OUTSIDE the truck about 99% of the time
1. The OEM Fender hole about 4" round
2. 4" by 4" (roughly) hole directly behind the headlight
3. 3" by 3" (roughly) hole below the headlight by the upper bumper cover

here is a picture of mine removed. You can see the 2 air inlets. The 3rd is hidden beneath the bottom.

the S&B is very similar to the Volant. Volant was first, but the S&B is another pretty good quality product. Plus, apparently you can get it's cover custom engraved

I dislike the Roush because I felt they went cheap and didn't do enough R&D for the RoushCharger version that I have. The later Roush CAI is an enclosed box.

Here is what I currently have. Unlike the Volant I used to have, the Roush CAI is exposed to Engine Bay heat, and frankly, I feel the design has alot more room for improvement. I'll probably change it out to the later model when I do the Intercooled Intake changeout

OK.. I'm going to ruffle a few feathers here. I have the Volant and like it but if I had the chance to do it again I'd buy the Banks. They have done diesel for years and know what they are doing. From what I've heard they are the real leaders of CAI, programmers and everything aftermarket engine MOD.

Just put a Rousch on

I installed a Rousch setup yesterday. Loads better throttle response. K&n had their best setup as a 15 hp gain, but the rousch had a 22 hp gain. I am sure I didn't gain 22 hp, but I sure gained more than I would have with the K&N. I hope to fully realize the gains next weekend when the exhaust gets put on.
I do know that the Rousch mounts are a LOT more solid than the K&N on my sons 93 F150.
I know its petty, but the only complaint after 2 days is that they didn't include stickers. LOL

Yeah, Roush doesn't like to advertise for some reason. I had to call them up and explain to some dimwit that "Yes, I do want a Roush sticker to put on my truck"

weirdly, Volant didn't send any stickers either

this is the Roush sticker(s) I ended up using

In geneal- a complete waste of $. i have yet to see a real dyno and track test that showed actual hp increase on a stock engine other than a couple of hp. It you go online and check for "air filter test" you will find a document that shows paper filters not only flow 99% of what these performce units flow but the post filter flow is much smoother and they filter the air much better. Cold air oes work- if you simply remove the oem air intake tube and install a homemade duct onto the oem air intake manifold and install a wix hp filter, you have everything all the $200 units offer!

Not a CAI system, but I replaced the stock tube with an Airaid MIT that pulls air from under the headlight and put in an AEM dryflow filter. Cleans up under the hood and definitely helps throttle response. Didn't really notice much mpg gain though.

Here's a couple ideas for a cheap do-it-yourself intake mod:
The kd4crs/Power Hungry/Gotts Mod (revisited - and with pictures) - Power Hungry Performance Forums

Page 2 shows a y-pipe to pull air from the fender and under the headlight. Might have tried this if I'd seen it before putting in the Airaid.

Lots of options...let us know what you end up with.
