where on the block will it tell me which one i have and what do i need to look for? it was dropped in before i got the truck (75 f100) and dont think they knew what they had either
I pulled this from a mustang forum, checking casting numbers is tough while the engine is in the truck, get a mirror...
The casting number and date code are found above the starter on the right-hand side of the block.
Here's the casting numbers to look for:
289: C5AE and C6AE (six bolt bellhousing blocks only, I'm not going to list the five-bolt blocks)
302: C8AE and C80E are the first ones, but the book notes that some of those blocks were assembled as 289s, anything after that (a code starting with C9 or any higher letter followed by any given number is a 302 block because the 289 left production in 1968. The C9 would be a dead giveaway because the first two letters of any give Ford part number or casting number is began with a letter to denote decade (starting with B for the 1950s) and the 2nd digit is the number year of that decade (meaning C9 would be 1969).)
