Im not sure about this. If I was guessing,I would say yes,but to a point to where they was about to lock up,and then I think it would charge anymore. Im sure someone else knows more about this than me. Im kinda curios myself if Im not right about this.
Yes, the bearings can go bad and the alternator will still be charging away!
But it won't do that for long.
If you've got bad bearings, get them changed and maybe change the regulator/brush assembly at the same time. If the commutator ring isn't severely worn, you've then got an alternator that should be good for another 150,000 miles.
The front bearing is a 6303-2RS. The rear one is a special, wider, bearing, a B10-50D. It's not commonly available, but any good bearing supply house can order one for you. I got mine from a 7.3 driver, John Burroughs, at Alliance Bearing in Van Nuys, CA for about $3.00. 818-988-1880 The front 6303's are around $7. Tell John you want them packed with PolyRex EM.
If you have any problems, send me a PM.. Sometimes they only want to deal with companies.. IF that is the case, let me know, I will call near you and put the bearings in will call. You should be able to pay cash..
