Noisy Altenator

I have a '68 F100 with an '85 302. The altenator was completely covered with dirt, grease, and grime. Before I removed it for cleaning, I stopped by Advance Auto and had them test it and the battery. Both checked out perfect!!!

I removed the altenator and take a wire brush to it and got it all nice and shiny. I even used my air compressor to blow out the dirt from the inside. The bearing feels tight, however, it makes a little noise when I spin the pulley. I believe the previous owner let it sit outside without the hood on. Rain probably got in it, plus a little water from my garden hose.

My question is: Will I ruin the altenator if I sprayed a little white grease or WD-40 on the bearing? Will it ruin the altenator if I sprayed some inside of it?

Thanks for any advice!

The bearings are sealed, so spraying them is not going to help. I would not recommend spraying anything inside it, since there are brushes and slip rings which could get contaminated.

Get a kit for it. It comes with a new bearing. It is probably filthy inside. Before you spend a lot of time on it, look at the slip rings. If they have deep groves, just get a rebuilt unit.

I sprayed a little white grease on the shaft directly behind the pulley. That seems to have done the trick for now. I appreciate all the feedback!

brewster - where did you find a $39 rebuilt? I can't image Autozone or Advance Auto at that price. I could be wrong though!

I got mine at fleet farm store. Don't know if you have one were you are . I would think you can get one for that price at auto zone. The alt I have has a external voltage regulator. If you have the internal reg in the alternator they cost like $100 to $ 150
