I drove about 5 miles today and then got out to lock my hubs in to go muddin', and man they were hot! Why are they so hot, is it from the brakes? It was some stop and go traffic. Maybe the axle is spinning all the time? Which would mean that when I lock or unlock my hub it doesn't change anything, right?
Please Help,
Thanks
Lars
My suggestion would be to check the bearings.
If you mud alot very good idea to re-grease them bearings afterwards.
I used to go alot, and learned a lesson after swamping my F250.
got water in the bearings and they rusted, then going down the road the one front tire locked up, and that was with 39's.
before it locked up, I knew something was funny, I stopped and felt the hubs and they were very hot. I thought the hub was going out and engaging the axle, but it was the bearings. I missed out on a great motorcycle ride because of it.
I needed new bearings. Put them in and now the front tires are hard to turn by hand. Do you think I packed the bearings too full of grease and now it has to work its way out?
Thanks
It is still producing lots of heat. I can back the nut off any more because it is right on the edge of tight and where it is losse. I think it might be my brakes draggin, but don't know how to goabout fixing it.
I need to get this fixed fast because it is my daily driver.

Get a Haynes manual. The torqueing sequence for the front bearings is an exact measurement. If they are not torqued properly you will be replacing them again very soon. I found this out the hard way, the first time I replaced them I did it like I would any other vehicle, tightened them and then backed the nut off until wheel would spin free with no wobble. Lasted 5000 miles. The second time I checked the manual and torqued them, that was 20,000 ago no problem. However it is winter service time so I will regrease/pack and reinstall them. I don't know if being a 4x4 makes the difference, but they are finicky. Hope this helps, good luck.
