1989 Bronco 302, 3spd. auto with manual 4wd shift and auto hubs.
Went to pull out of the drive the other day,,,,,,,, CLUNK ! Ok, so I tried a couple things, fwd, rev, 4wd,,,,,, 4 Lo, moved 2 feet, CLUNK again!
Now it won't go at all. You can hear the trans turning when you put it in gear. And hear the parking pin trying to lock if you ease it towards park, but it won't go.
Tried to push it out from in front of the garage, but Damn, it seems like it doesn't even want to roll now !! Even in 'N'.
Any thoughts, suggestions, insights, recommendations, proposals, similar experiences, theories, or just really good guesses on what may be wrong, what I need to do to fix it, and how big of a pain in my butt and my wallet it is going to be, would be greatly appreciated.
Well E Normus , I know what Da hell happen' to yo tranny , it'sa da same thing that happens TOO a 90 year old man on his Honeymoon wiff a 30 year old bride---it done slipped outta da cog, missed the groove , and now it just ain't gonna Move......Take it too A...A..AAMCO....Seriously , my guess would be that your xfer case has probably broken a chain that connects things up inside your transfer case.......I say this assuming you have like maybe a 1356 xfer case.......fd
yup yup, figured it was somethin' like that. A broken chain, or gear or something that just got busted or on a bind. You know I just hate to take it in somewhere and Pay somebody $50 an hour to do somethin' I can fudge together myself.
'Course I would have to know if any of the x-fer cases are interchangable or if I have to put the exact same one back on. And I'd have to know if it made a difference whether or not the same # xfer case off a manual trans. would fit the same # xfer case off an Auto trans.
And I'd also have to find a good used one for sale somewhere <~~ <<hint, hint <<
And you know,,,,,,, If somebody out there was bored and thirsty,
I got a garage full of tools and a whole lotta beer :P
Okay, same sound happened to me with similar results. Want to know what it was? Brakes. The pad slipped off and wedged itself in the hub.
If it is your transfer case, and your transfer case is a simple chain design, pull it apart and look at it. You can tell if it's your transfer case, pull it, drain it, and shake it. If the chain broke, or even if gears broke, you should hear something. If it's just a bind you should be able to open it and fix it cheap.
Its the rear end, the same thing happened to me yesterday went to pull out, clunk, it wouldn't move, back up did the same thing, pulled my diff cover and my spider gears all fell out, the shaft that connects them broken, so i would put money on it that it is your rearend. pull the cover off and you will see.
It can't be the t-case chain - that only turns when you're in 4WD. I'd vote for the rear end if the shifter wasn't giving you trouble, but I think it has to be inside the transmission. The rear axle wouldn't affect the shifter. :-X23
The noise when you go to put it in Park, is it like a grind? If so, the tranny is probably fine, and it is all in the t-case. If it grinds into park, that means th output shaft on the tranny is turning. My money is on a blown input or gearset in the t-case. You probably have a 1345 case, kinda weak. Try to find a 1356, or even an NP208. You will have to change the front universal to fit these, but they should just bolt up to the tranny. Anything up to 96 should just bolt up.
