I am having problems with transmission (4r44e) in my brother-in-laws 96 ranger. The truck slips real bad when shifting from 2-3 gear. If I get on the gas hard it will not shift from 2-3 at all until I let off the gas completely. The truck shifts perfect in all other gears at all throttle postions. The OD light began flashing tonight when I got on the gas hard and it would not shift from 2-3. The old fluid was in good condition before it was flushed and fluid is all new and is at the correct level as is the filter. The tranny only has 54K miles on it. Could it be an EPC soleniod or band problem?
If this problem came about After a tranny flush, maybe suspect the flush solvents have loosened up some gum, varnish, or sludge & clogged, or are hanging something up.
So if you think maybe it's deposits, perhaps consider trying something like Seafoam Trans Tune, or Auto-Rx for trannies & see if it'll disolve whatever is hanging things up.
In the meatime Don't get on the throttle so hard, as any slipping will heat & varnish up & wear the bands & friction material, plus put out more trash & you don't need that.
If it's a mechanical or electrical problem, the above won't have any effect.
Of the two, the Seafoam Trans Tune is less expensive & can remain in the tranny until the next service.
The Auto-Rx costs more and it & the tranny fluid come out after 1000 miles.
Ok, I tried the transmission additives and that did not work thanks for the info Paw Paw. So I adjusted the bands to make sure there were no issues there and took the truck out for a drive. The 2-3 shift at light throttle was still flared but WOT it went throught the gears like a champ. After a number of heavy throttle test runs I stopped for gas. As I leave the station I get the no shift in 2-3 again and the the flashing OD light. I get a P0761 code which is shift soleniod 3 malfunction. According to the info I have this could be a soleniod failure, valve failure or PCM problem. Does any body have any info on testing this without having a tranny testing unit? I don't want to get into a throwing parts at it until you get it situation? My guess is that it is a bad soleniod mechanically since it tested out to be within specs for resistence?
OK, P0761 = Shift solenoid C Performance, or Stuck Off.
Seeing as how it's resistance checks ok & it works "like champ" at WOT, when there is lots of line pressure present & with the PO761 code, it still makes me wonder if the tranny flush stirred up something, thats hanging this solenoid up????
So did this problem come about After the tranny flush, or was it there beforehand????
Did you try Both additives????
How long, or for how many miles has any one been in there????
If the tranny wasn't acting out before the tranny flush & you think the flush has stirred up some deposits, but you haven't tried the Auto-Rx yet, which is an ester based lube, with a high level of detergency & dispersency, maybe it would be worth a try.
I suppose it could be a mechanical problem, but if it wasn't there before the tranny flush, seems to me it may be gum, varnish, or sludge, stirred up by the flush, so don't give up on the cleaner uppers yet, it may take a little longer for the additives to take effect, to soften & dissolve the deposits.
Of course if the solenoid has a mechanical problem, the additives aren't gonna fix that, but that tranny sure will be all fresh & clean inside for any needed internal work!!!!
Will be interesting to hear what you find, so keep us posted.
I would suspect a blown valve body gasket. there is an extensive thread on here about this condidtion. one big clue is do you have engine braking when you pull down in to low and let off the gass if not then the valve body gasket is blown.
Yes I do have engine braking in shift selector position 1. It doesn't have a lot of breaking but the engine definitely does not free wheel when I let off the gas. That is why I wasn't suspecting the valve body gasket as primary cause of the problem. Trannys are the biggest pains when they don't work right.
