Noticed 2 adjustment bolts/nuts on the side of my 87 ranger 2.9. Dose anyone know if you can, or should make adjustments? And if so, what torque and back off turns are called for?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-Dec-02 AT 08:40 AM (EST)]The pistons that control these have a lot of travel and wear would be easily compensated for. Forward is the overdrive band and the other is the imtermediate(2nd). If this has a double band, the overdrive is 3 1/2 turns. Under the lock nut is an O-ring that by this time will be welded to the adjustment bolt. It will have to be cut off in order to turn the adjuster in. It will have to be replaced or it will start leaking. You do not want to move this bolt out more than a couple of turns or the internals will fall out. These are in a terrible spot to get at with the transmission in the car. So bottom line is there is no upside and a 99% chance you will do damage. I am strongly in favor of people rebulding their own transmissions. The A4LD is a sweetheart to rebuild and easy for the average person to do without special tools in most cases. Just don't adjust the bands when it is in the car. I doubt the bands are worn at all.
