Unhappy Bronco II 2.9 Valve Lash Adjustments

I recently put rebuilt heads on my bronco and I had valves ticking. So I followed the directions in the Chiltons manual for valve lash adjustment. After adjusting every valve I still have clicking? I adjusted the roller arms so they touched the valves then I tightened them 1 1/2 turn as the manual directed. Does anyone have any insight?

Question Timing

I actually think the clicking is better after the valve lash adjustment. To be honest I can't say that the clicking was not there before the top half rebuild. I added some Rislone incase it is a noise lifter. I don't know about the oil pressure because I don't have a gauge. Gauges are my next project. Speaking of gauges...does anyone know where I could get gauges that incorporate some kind of a buzzer? A bad thermostat combined with me not noticing the temp gauge caused all this fuss in the first place.

I just took my B2 out for a drive and it is very sluggish between 2 and 3 grand. When we timed it we noticed that the wires on the distributor cap were arranged differently than the manual said they should be (the firing order was numbered different on the cap than the manual called for). We rearranged them and timed it like manual directed. Upon further reading of the manual I noticed that it said to go with the firing order that it was originally. This does not make sense to me. Do after market distributors and caps have different firing orders? Should I change it back to the way it was before the rebuild?<O

The correct firing order is 1-4-2-5-3-6.

That is what I understand the correct firing order to be as well. When we retimed it we used that firing order. The following passage out of the Chilton’s manual is what I don't understand:

"If a distributor is not keyed for installation with only one orientation, it could have been removed previously and rewired. The resultant wiring would hold the correct firing order, but could change the relative placement of the plug towers in relation to the engine. For this reason it is imperative that you label all wires before disconnecting any of them. Also, before removal, compare the current wiring with the accompanying illustrations. If the current wiring does not match, make notes in your book to reflect how your engine is wired."

Can anyone explain this passage?

Assuming that I have the timing right, what else could cause my B2 to be sluggish between 2 and 3 grand? It ran great before I cracked the head (this is what makes me wonder about the firing order…if it was wrong why did it run so well before I cracked the head?)

I'm really stumped...any help is greatly appreciated…

On a positive note the clicking is goneJ

To double check your timing turn the enigine to TDC on #1 and make sure the rotor is pointing to #1 post.

Thanks for all your help! I fine tuned the timing with a timing light per firing order in the manual and it is runs much better It is still a little sluggish but I don't think it is timing.
