am putting a 390 into my 56 f100, have installed a mustang II front end. Now the orig oil pan does not fit, does anyone know what and where to prchase one? thanks steve
There have been a number of posts about installing big blocks in F1/F-100s and the consequences of mixing IFS, oil pans, exhaust systems etc. I know because I have a 390 in my F1 and found out too late about the mixture and now can not install the MII IFS.
Take a look with the search function (which I agree the new one is pretty bad) but in a nut shell, you are going to need a rear sump pan and rear sump oil pump pick-up. You have more room in the 56 than I did so there's a good chance the IFS will fit and you can either make headers or find some to fit between the motor mounts and steering box - that's your problem side space wise.
I know I've typed up the long and the short of it about 5 times. The threads are probably dated around October to December 2008. If you can't find them, I'll type it up again for you! I think Havi had the best input on the pans if I recall correctly!
Get a rear sump pan and extended sump pickup off 360 or 390 that was in a four wheel truck. All four wheel drive Ford trucks have the rear sump pan and pickup tube.
Steve, <O</O I have a 1955 F100 with a 390/C6 combo as well as a Heidt’s Mustang II IFS. After trying to use an aftermarket front sump oil pan and rear sump oil pan as suggested by 55pief out of a 4x4 truck, I ended up with a Canton double sump oil pan (link below). Even with the double sump Canton pan, it is a real tight fit. With this set up the firewall on the driver side will need to be modified (recessed 1 1/2”). I think if I would have it to do all over again, I would have installed a stroked 351 (393) in my truck. <O</O Another couple of issues you will face will be the steering linkage, oil filter stem, and header clearance. I used a Flaming River steering column, 1969 F100 4x4 oil filter stem (45 degree offset type) and Sanderson Headers (went through several sets) to make everything work. With the headers, I had to slightly notch the frame. <O</O I love the ole FE engines, but after the expense of rebuilding the engine (Edelbrock aluminum heads, adjustable rockers, etc…) along with the other challenges, it has made me rethink my engine selection. I am nearing the end of my project and might change my mind when I experience the torque from my FE.
If you have any other questions, I would be more than happy to help you out. <O</O Lance<O</O
Four wheel drive pan from a 75-76 might be the way to go. As for the torque of the FE (I always called them interceptor) engines, definately!! I had one in a 77 F-150, it would just about burn the rear tires off with a 3.25 gear and C6. Ask Archion how it ran, I have heard rumors about how many people he beat with it whan he was a teenager.
There's another thread going on right now that is a parrallel. I have a 390 FE and C6 in my 51 and things are VERY tight on the left side when it comes to exhausting withthe stock steering box. I had to go over the fram withheaders. I simply used a remote oil filter which got rid of that problem, but with my headers I blocked the frame where the MII shock towers would weld on.
One thing that was done on my truck before I bought it was on the left side, an exhaust manifold was installed backwards to point the left exhaust to the front. Then it looped down and back from there. Your selection of a motor mount system will also be critical to your being able to install an IFS. I might check with Chassis Engineering. They make a bolt in MII IFS cross member that has motor mounts welded on it. I would ask them what kind of headers it is spaced out for.
