One thing to keep in mind, just FYI: in 1972 the standard published horsepower ratings system changed. Before 72, you'll see hp ratings given as unloaded, or GROSS. Then in 72 the hp ratings became NET, after all accessories loaded on. The figures seem to sharply decline, but in fact a 1971 390 and a '72 390 are exactly the same. Just the ratings changed.
it was in 73 when the emission laws started you can easily tell the difference i had a 72 390 with barely any emissions and a 73 that was loaded up with emissions, the hp dropped quite a bit.
