hp ratings change
One thing to keep in mind, just FYI: in 1972 the standard published horsepower ratings system changed. Before 72, you'll see hp ratings given as unloaded, or GROSS. Then in 72 the hp ratings became NET, after all accessories loaded on. The figures seem to sharply decline, but in fact a 1971 390 and a '72 390 are exactly the same. Just the ratings changed.

There were also some emissions laws that dropped output hp in '72, according to stuff I've read on the net.
So you most likely have 255 @ 4400 rpm GROSS, and about 180 NET. Give or take.
