I was wondering if there is an adjustment for the shift lever? I've checked out the downshaft and it doesn't seem to be broken, so I'm thinking cable adjustments? Where are they located?
I had the same problem with my 00 F250 Diesel. Pull off the plastic housing and check the plastic bushings. If thats not it stick your head under your dash and find where the cable connects to a steel plate that is connected to the shifting rod from the column. It is held with 2 torx head screws. In my case it was the problem, they were loose. I removed them applied some loctite and reinstalled them and torqued them down. Never has a problem since.

You are wonderful!!! Though I see bushing wear responsible for some of the play, one of the torx screws was almost all the way out. I cranked it in and now it's far more tollerable. THANKS M8!!!
