so i took a trip to the coast today, about 130 mile one way, i had about 800lbs in the bed of the truck. the trans temp on the way there reached about 195 and on the way back i hit 200. nothing too steep on the way over or back. the 200 was when i was on the freeway and it was flat. i stopped and idled for about 10 min and the temp never changed until i started going again and at that point it rapidly dropped to 175 but slowly creeped up the rest of the way home to about 195. do i need to flush my trans cooler? if so, how do i do it?
i read that the bypass valve keeps trans fluid from going to the cooler in order to warm up the trans. can this bypass valve be eliminated and the fluid always go to the cooler, or does it need to be in place for proper operation.

Quote from that site "If you removed it and the cooler were blocked, you'd lose the transmission in a matter of seconds."

That's not what it does. It does not bypass to help warm the trans. It only bypasses if the coolers are plugged. That allows lube flow in the event of a plugged cooler.
aaahh it all makes sense now, i see how the whole bypass thing works now. thanks again for the info. i did that test today and it was indeed my bypass valve that is faulty. ford can have it tomorrow and its only $56, so not too bad. the funny thing was when i went in to get the part the guy behind the counter was one of the mechanics. i told him what i wanted and he looked perplexed and said theres no such thing. i of corse said "yes there is" and told him what it was. he dug into the depths of his computer and sure enough there it was. then he asked how i determined that it was the problem and i said that theres an abundant about of knowledge online at a site called ford truck enthusiasts and he should check it out.

Why would a Ford tech need to know how to fix/diagnose a Ford truck?
As I think you found out there was nothing wrong with the bypass. The abundant wealth of knowledge on this site has determined that the bypass valve frequently fails. All it has inside is a ball and a spring. It almost NEVER fails.
What frequently happens is that the coolers plug up and then the bypass works as designed and opens up. The only solution at this point is new coolers. You can't flush coolers, it doesn't work.
