C4 Brake Drum
Another question, what would be the best way to clean the valves? Is is safe to let them lay in some petrol?

The surface finish on the drum MUST be correct - too smooth will reduce the coefficient of friction (slip), and too rough will accelerate band wear.
As for cleaning valve body parts, petrol will not harm the steel or aluminum parts. If the transmission has nylon check ***** in it, keep them and all plastic and rubber parts out of the petrol(swelling/softening may occur).
You have another post asking about band adjustment. The procedure is to assemble the transmission and then adjust the bands. The adjustment screw is tightened (clockwise) until the resistance increases quickly (band clearance removed). Then rotate the adjustment screw counterclockwise the specified number of turns (usually two complete revolutions). Then tighten the locknut without allowing the adjustment screw to rotate. Ford recommends that the locknut be replaced at each adjustment, but I have re-used them several times without any problems.
Good luck
