Water pump ?

Ok My water pump has been leaking out of the seep hole for a while now, not too bad just a few drips here and there, it is getting worse now.. a small puddle.. my ? is I know that water is getting past the seals inside the pump, I had this happen years ago on a small block Dodge truck, I remember i drove a freeze plug into the weep hole to stop the leak, and i put at least another 50k on that truck before i sold it. would i be tempting fate by doing the same thing to this water pump or should i wait to replace it with a new one? what harm could come from this?

Thanks in adavance

Bryan

I wouldn't plug it. I would go ahead and replace it with a new Airtex unit. Plugging it and having water in the bearing cartridge could spell disaster with the large fan the waterpump carries. I wouldn't want the bearings to fail and have the fan clutch take out the radiator, etc.

Can't help but agree with Roland, plus you wouldn't want to leave yourself stranded. If you have my kind of luck it won't let go in your driveway.

Might get lucky once, but I wouldn't tempt fate again.

another way to look at it is: is a 120 dollar water pump worth the cost of an 8000 dollar engine or any other component that may be harmed by the lack of proper maintenance?

just switch the pump out and have peace of mind.....

More info on the Airtex unit? Is it better than Motocraft or International stock for the 7.3L? What is the cost? I'm looking at little green puddles under my truck lately too.

For price comparison here is a list of water pumps for 7.3 PSD at Rock Auto LINK Click on LINK not Rock Auto for water pump page.

For the money the Airtex is the best. JMHO

May find it cheaper if you do a search using AIRTEX Part # AW4114

Edit : Northern has a good price. Nice link Roland.

I'm on Northern's email list. I got mine for less with a "coupon". Was under $100 total with shipping.

Actually, the price was reduced by $5 and I got it for ~$105 total. I just checked my invoice. That CRS has caught up to me again.
