i have a 92 f250 7.3 4x4 i just bought it the tranny was replaced last fall and it was parked all winter the trans has maybe 400 miles on it i started driving it today and to shift from 1st to 2nd you have to get it up to 2500rpm then let off or it wont shift then once in 2nd if you try to accelerate normaly it will go fine for a second then it is like it pops out of gear it just revs up and wont go but if you let off it kinda bangs back into gear and you can stand on it if you want and its fine what could cause this a sticky valve from sitting? i called the previous owner and it may still be under warranty but if is not what should i look at a new tranny?
oh and also when i am driving my volt guage bounces back and fourth and the lights dim when it goes down and get brighter when it goes up but when i am stopped it is fine only when the truck is moving
Sounds like an electrical issue to me, not sure as to whether the PCM/trans is causing the spikes, or the alternator is going bad and the PCM and trans just suffer from that. Pull the alt and have it tested, next in line would be the TECA relay cause it may be getting sticky and not feeding the PCM properly...
Have you tried resetting the FIPL on the side of the IP.
Sounds like there is a power loss for some reason with the voltage drop.....check the alternator connections. Could also be the regulator (internal) brushes. Do you get a flickering alt light.
Any loss of power would effect the trans it is electronically controlled. Does the light on the shift stalk illuminate dimly.......that could be a bad TECA relay.
the alternator was replaced last fall to but i can have it tested the over drive light on the shifter is off unless i push the button then the light comes on the charging light dosnt come on at all oh also if i let the truck sit for a couple days both batteries are stone cold dead and they are new just because i took them in to get tested the other day and they both tested fine what is the teca relay?
Pull and test alternator, I've seen them go bad after just a week of driving - it happens, especially with the high quality (or the lack thereof) of many new auto parts...
Josh is right tho, you got a massive drain somewhere, could very well be the alternator itself, but do test the fuse panel like he says.
The TECA relay is on the driver side fender, tis either attached to the fender under some plastic covers, or tis on the side of a vertical steel plate right next to the fender and again under a plastic cover.
thanks guys when i got it it had wires for lights run all over the place and all that wiring was a joke i just spent all morning pulling all of that off there were wires with power to them run all over and just cut off and wires with 4 splices in about 2 feet i have no idea wht the person that wired everything up was thinking i will look for my test light in a little bit and see if i can find out if anything is draining it
ok this is what i found so far cuz i cant find my test light first off my rear tank has no fuel in it oops haha and while i was bleading the injector lines on top of where the fuel filter screws on there is sopposed to be a wire but it is all melted off what is this for? could this be my problem?
No to hijack but I'm having the same problem - rebuilt trans, newer alternator, etc. Thanks for the help! Mine is a 91. Is there any difference between it and the 92?
ok i just took the truck for a ride and now it dosnt pop out of gear but sometimes it starts off in drive or overdrive other times it starts in first but it shifts from 1st to drive or over drive i tried shifting it manualy but it will not shift from 1st to second only 1st to drive
Starting off in 4th gear is more than likely a computer problem, or rather, lack of power to the computer. There is a relay that feeds power to the transmission computer and that can go bad on these trucks.
