ZF-5 speed for 96 deisel

can any one tell me if a ZF trans from a 460 will fit the deisel? The bell housing is a little different on the older(87) transmission, but will the back half and the gears be the same?

the gearing is different from the gas to manual. the jump from 2nd to 3rd in the gasser is worse than shifting from 2nd to 5th in the diesel. there is a 1.68 gearing difference between 2nd and 3rd in the gasser and a 1.61 gearing difference between 2nd and 5th in the diesel. id stay away from it even if it does bolt up the same......

Thanks for the info. The part number for the rear housing is the same, so I'll rob that piece and rebuild my existing tranny.

Wow the gas zf5 first is soooooo short. holy crap!

I thought the final gear was .72 or .71 though.
I know the M5OD is a bit taller.

the final gear on the auto is either .72 or .71. its different from the 5 speed by a little bit. the gasser has to have the 1st and 2nd be that low so that it can get a heavy load moving by using gearing instead of engine power. but if youre on a hill, as soon you hit 3rd in one you better be turning 4k rpm or youre heading back down to 2nd in a hurry.

There are two ZF 5spd trannies. The S5-42 and the S5-47. they are slightly different.

The ZF S5-42 is built in both a 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive version with gas and diesel designs

ZF first introduced the S5-42 in 1987 and was used in the Ford F250, F350, F450 and Super Duty trucks until 1994.

All gears on the S5-42 are fully synchronized with an input torque rating of 420 ft-lb

Standard gear ratios on the ZF S5-42:<TABLE cellPadding=0><TBODY><TR><TD><TABLE cellPadding=0 width=166><TBODY><TR><TH scope=col colSpan=2>Close Ratio </TH></TR><TR><TH scope=row width=85>

You can see that they lowered the gearing for the PSDs as their torque peaks later. Running a S5-42 behing a PSD would not be good choice IMHO.

I have a S5-42 behind my 6.9 IDI and while is works great, I wish I had lower gearing for trailering.
My 97 PSD has the S5-47 and the lower gearing is real nice, but lower would be even nicer. I have been toying with the idea of swapping the gears or whole trans from a gasser to get the lower first, but the wider steps in the other gears may be too much. Our engines redline around 3400rpm while the gassers are around 4500. Runnind the gasser ratios would require you to rev close to redline and then drop fairly low down in the next gear.....maybe too low. I would do the math, but feeling lazy.....

hey Dirk, here's my situation

i've got the '92 7.3idi, e4od (broken), 4.10 gears.

got a parts truck i just found for a real good price, has the 460 with (i'm assuming... gotta take a drive tomorrow to see it) the zf-s5-42.

have you confirmed whether or not the zf from the 460 will bolt onto my 7.3 diesel?

repeated searching all over the internet has led me to some guys saying "there's no way it will fit" to "they're the SAME tranny with different gears"

this parts truck would be ideal, as i'll be needing the new pedals and clutch, m/s cyl etc etc.

i dont plan on doing any heavy towing either, so the "redline to stall" shift issue shouldnt be too bad i'm hoping, especially with the 4.10s.

HELP!! heh heh, i'll be taking the drive in the morning hopefully so any quick input would be great!

thanks!

I have had the same results searching.
I will have a look at my spares today and compare them. I believe that the spacer/adaptor between the engine and trans has the big ford pattern on the trans side......

b.mewhiney7 The zf5 from the 460 will not bolt up to th 7.3. The transmission has to be from a diesel ether an idi or a stroke. The pedals and other parts would work though.
