i may be picking up a 1985 f250 with a 6.9 new to the old deisel game truck has 300K on it but just had a new injector pump put on not two days ago any major mechanical issues with these engines truck is 2 wheel drive with a 4 speed trans mission any help would be apriciated
The 6.9 is a rock solid motor. Properly cared for, they will serve well for well over 300k. They are not speed demons but they'll pull down a mountain. If they have a weak point, it's probably head gaskets. The head bolts are smaller in size (7/16" IIRC) and don't clamp as well as the 1/2" bolts. If the engined is non-turboed, that really shouldn't be an issue. There is a lot of good, diesel specific info on Oilburners.net and www.thedieselstop.com
I have the same truck in a 1986 year model. If you keep the correct antifreeze and oil in the engine, treat every thing with care, it will run you a lifetime. The truck is one of the best Fords ever built, a real "work horse"!
i just bought a 1986 ford e350 van 6.0 diesel its been siting for 5 years the glow plugs will not come on . when i turn the key i have no glow plug light . when cold will only start with starting fluid is there a fuse or system just needs cleaned for siting so long . run great when started and once hot starts right up first diesel i ever had . i will need to learn a lot about diesel engines i am mechanicly inclined worked on many gas engines but not diesels the van has 36,000 miles

6.9 diesel correct? You need to see what type of glowplug controller system you have. The older system screwed into the back of the engine and had a solenoid over on the fender, and the newer system had a controller mounted to the rear of the aircleaner with the solenoid built in. The vans were a little different, so the locations may vary on them.
The newer system looks like this.
