The 6.9 is a rock solid motor. Properly cared for, they will serve well for well over 300k. They are not speed demons but they'll pull down a mountain. If they have a weak point, it's probably head gaskets. The head bolts are smaller in size (7/16" IIRC) and don't clamp as well as the 1/2" bolts. If the engined is non-turboed, that really shouldn't be an issue. There is a lot of good, diesel specific info on Oilburners.net and www.thedieselstop.com

I have the same truck in a 1986 year model. If you keep the correct antifreeze and oil in the engine, treat every thing with care, it will run you a lifetime. The truck is one of the best Fords ever built, a real "work horse"!

6.9 diesel correct? You need to see what type of glowplug controller system you have. The older system screwed into the back of the engine and had a solenoid over on the fender, and the newer system had a controller mounted to the rear of the aircleaner with the solenoid built in. The vans were a little different, so the locations may vary on them.

The newer system looks like this.
