My truck in bleeding oil, after a couples hours of tracing upward, I found that the ebpv is leaking. It was a slow leak ( 1 gallon of oil in 5 hrs) but now it poured out a gallon in 5 mins. It is coming from the push rod from the ebpv. Am I gonna have to replace the whole pedesal? It doesn't leak right away, but I can watch it as I start it up and see it only leaks once the ebpv opens.
What most guys do is delete the ebpv actuator. I think that Ron's turbo service has a modified pedestal for sell or IH used a different pedestal also. I believe you can use a pedestal from a 94 powerstroke because they supposedly didn't have the ebpv installed. There is a rebuild kit available but pricey and most of the time the aluminum housing is scored beyond use.
Huh, strange, I wonder why there isn't one on this engine, I've heard of a couple of others all stock with no ebpv installed but didn't see it first hand. I don't know what the build date on this truck but it's got me curious.
stephen.south: I live in cleveland ohio and my truck runs fine without the ebpv. unless you're going farther north.
Not to hijack this thread but can the oring on the other side of the ebpv rod be changed? The one behind the 1.5" cover thats held in by a snap ring. Can it be changed with the turbo and pedistal on the truck?
It is a brown viton o-ring and pretty small thickness. I wouldn't be holding my breath about finding it at the local hardware store or parts house. I would check with Ford first.
Ok, thanks, I found the rebuild kit on diesel site and just ordered it, since I do go up north sometimes in the winter.
The kit <TABLE style="BORDER-COLLAPSE: collapse" cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=2 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=ProdDisplay1>1994-2003 7.3L Turbo Pedestal Rebuild Kit </TD><TD class=ProdDisplay1 align=right><INPUT id=strProductPartNumberBase type=hidden> </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>on diesel site, at the end has a NOTE: If Oil is dripping from the EBP piston rod housing ....the entire pedestal assembly must be replaced
I live in an extremely cold climate (coldest in the lower 48) and I gutted mine years ago. It is so cold here I used to have the epbv get stuck closed at -30* or colder. Runs much better with it gone, no more loss of power, no more sticking, no more oil leaks. The only down side is that it takes 10 miles or so of driving for the heat to come on in the cab. I don't really care - I work outside year round and am dressed for the cold. At night the truck is parked in a heated garage and ready to go - warm in the morning. I think the epbv was one of the worst things Ford placed on the 7.3L Diesel.
