I have a 1996 F350 crew cab longbed 4x4 with the 5.8 351W. I was pulling a trailer loaded with about 10000 lbs on it and i was going about 60 mph. My check engine light came on and i pulled over to make sure nothing was wrong. i turned the truck off and when i restarted it the light cleared itself. i filled up with some premium shell gas and the truck pulled very easy at 65 mph. after i got the trailer unloaded i noticed what i would call a lopey idle when the truck is sitting there. when i accelerate it smooths out and then when it returns to idle it starts again. the light hasnt come back on but im wondering if i burnt a spark plug or does anyone know what the problem might be?
the CEL came on for a reason and stored a code in the computer. Ford Fuel Injection has instructions for pulling codes using a paperclip and counting the CEL Flashes. Until you get those codes, your basicly throw darts at a wall.

Or money out the window. The site above can be confusing so here's the readers digest version. Find the EEC test harness under the hood on the drivers side fender and locate and ground the single STI wire. Turn the key to run but don't start the motor and the codes will begin to flash on the check engine light.
can you tell me the easiest way to determine what code it pulled? i looked at that site but it was confusing and i couldnt understand how to tell what code was pulled.
The las time i went to an auto parts store to get my light checked it had already cleared itself like this one did and they said that without the light being on they cant pull the codes.
he said that it would have the stored codes but without the engine light being on he cant pull the codes with the reader. something about the scanner not getting power without the light being on.
ok so i went to an oreilly's and got a scanner. after the scan was run it said that the CEL light was off and there were no codes to be read. it said something about 3 of the seven processes couldnt be read and they were the o2 sensor banks and the catalytic converter. i have an OBDII reader and do not have the triangular plug that is shown on the ford fuel injection site. all i have are straight connectors. any help?
Lol. That's some bull****. KOEO is stored. Go to an O'Reillys and tell them you need to borrow a scanner for a few minutes. Then do it yourself.
Yeah that's some bull$%#@, because I fixed a busted egr vacuum line that caused the cel to come on, fixed it and light turned off. I scanned the computer a few weeks later with cel OFF and retrieved codes.
