86 f150 300/6 stock except aftermarket air cleaner and most emissions removed by po
Cold starts are crazy recently. Had the truck about 18 months now so i went through last winter and it didnt act this way. Set the choke and truck fires right up but idles very lopey. After 4 seconds or so it smoothes out some but still lopey. If i kick fast idle off it idles good. But if i try to drive in under a minute or 2 the truck bogs down then will surge off. Sometimes i can smell fuel too outside the cab. But not always. Anything trip anyones trigger to a possible CHECK HERE?
This is an all too common question out here - "I have a computer-controlled engine that's all stock except the PO did some stuff to make it run better."
Nothing in any way against you or anything, but the two things you list as being changed are the exact best things to change to cause the kinds of problems you're reporting. If it were me, I'd begin with returning the factory air cleaner (and all its related plumbing) in place... clean the choke linkages, make sure the carb is securely bolted down... then maybe pull computer codes to see what it thinks is going on....

Computer controlled (86 300) and emissions removed. The cause of many problems.
Without all the pieces in place telling the computer everything it needs to know, the computer hasn't got a clue, so it goes into "limp" mode. This will let it run and drive, but nowhere near as well as it *could* if the ECU was getting the info it needs, so it can adjust timing and fuel mixture to optimize the performance and MPG.
Yeah i understand. It would be nice to have those things to return it to stock but i have neither.
My problem has started about 3 weeks ago. It has ran great til then and still runs great now after running a couple few minutes. The fuel smell is a new issue as well. Carb is bolted tight. Thought maybe it was a sign the carb may need rebuilt.
